“Food Portioning Assistant”

Purpose of Role
You will assist in the creation of small, individual packages from bulk quantities such as baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, grapes, snap peas, bagels, wraps, etc. You will work with a team of 8 other volunteers to get the items ready to be packed into the good food bags that are sent home with children every weekend. 
Where time permits, this team also helps with the sanitizing of the plastic tote bins used for delivering food bags to our partner schools on the last day of the school week.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the washing and drying of produce. 

  • Assist in the portioning and bagging of items included in that week’s menu.. 

  • Assist in the counting of individual packages to confirm amount packed.

  • Assist in the sanitizing of food bins.

Time Requirements
Each packing shift takes about 2 hours. 

There is flexibility with this role. You can sign up to attend one shift, or sign up to come out every week. We welcome all help. 

 

These packing shifts normally take place on Wednesday from 10:00am-12:00pm. In weeks where the Friday is a P.D. Day or public holiday, this packing shift will be moved forward to the Tuesday afternoon, from 1:00pm-3:00pm. 

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • An understanding of safe food handling.

  • A can-do attitude.

  • Comfort with repetitive tasks.
     

Please note that at this time you will be required to wear a mask for the duration of your shift as an added safety measure for our volunteers.

 

Orientation and Training
For your first shift we ask that you arrive 15 minutes early to receive an orientation session. Staff will be on hand to greet you, give you a tour and answer any questions you may have. 


This position is supervised by the “Portion Team Leaders” who are on-site to ensure the portioning shift runs smoothly.

Screening 

Must provide proof of up-to-date vaccination (triple).
